Melbourne Lord Mayor’s Creative Writing Award, 2014

WINNER (age 12)

The Melbourne Lord Mayor’s Creative Writing Award for Under 18s, for The Colour of Courage.

Me, age 12 (bottom left), the Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle (top right), and some of the other winners.

What the judges said: “This story offers a simple, yet meaningful (and often forgotten) message about taking control of our own lives and our own happiness. It is a touching and mature piece of writing which leaves the reader free to choose his or her own meaning at the end. The judges felt it was a highly accomplished piece of narration not often found in younger writers and wondered at this child’s experiences of the world. It left some of the readers quite moved.”
