Meet the Restless Girls

(If you haven’t heard of The Restless Times yet, check out this post first.)

It’s been a few days since the first issue of The Restless Times was published. We are so incredibly grateful for everyone who has read, loved, and shared their thoughts on the newspaper. It looks absolutely stunning, and it’s packed full of beautiful words and imagery to ignite a fire in your heart. Hopefully, you’ve had at least a quick flick through, and felt the inspiration soaking in from every direction. But who’s behind it all?

We’ve put together a team of 10 (and counting) beautiful people from across the world. The utter magic of communicating with this group is indescribable. I am so blessed and grateful to be able to create alongside these girls, and forever indebt to the lovely Darcy for making this possible. But it seemed like it was time for you to get to know them too.

Who are you? What are you passionate about?

My name’s Matenia and I’m 18. I shoot in film and digital, and music and writing are the things that get me through. I like to spend afternoons in coffee shops with friends, writing in journals, drawing, and taking pictures. I’m a free-the-nipple advocate and a human rights activist.

I currently live in NYC, and I’m so passionate about my art in all forms. My photography, my poetry, my blog, my drawings … all of it helps display parts of my life and things I care about. My friends and family are also beyond important to me.

What does being ‘restless’ mean to you?

Being restless to me means to be constantly moving, creating, and meeting new people.

What inspires you?

Film photographers, Z-boys, Andy Warhol, my friends, flowers, coffeeshops, music.

What are you bringing to The Restless Times?

I’m bringing creativity, my views on the world, and my art.

Who are you? What are you passionate about?

I am a 16-year-old girl trying to live with as much sunshine and kindness in my life as possible. I adore education and think that learning is the way to a safer and more understanding world. I love the colour yellow (because it is the colour of all the best things: sunshine, sunflowers, mustard, and sunsets!)

I think education, kindness, and understanding are the three things that can help young adults find their place within the limits that this world has set. The pressure that teenagers face to not be childlike and yet not have an adult opinion is something that makes my blood curdle. I am a big believer that our existence is so strange and unbelievable, that we have to place our own purpose on our lives. I’m truly passionate about letting others know that this struggle to find out if anything matters isn’t a struggle people have to face alone.

What does being ‘restless’ mean to you?

Being restless to me is both a bad and a good thing, it just depends on how the individual utilises the feeling. As mentioned before, young adults are pushed out of their childhood only to find that adulthood is not ready to accept them yet. This in-between feeling is what causes restlessness within our hearts because we simply do not know what to do with our energy. This stagnancy can either remain a stagnancy or it can be used by the individual to create and inspire and live. I started this newspaper when I was feeling overwhelmingly restless and angry at how the world was letting so much ugliness in. That’s what being restless means to me. Restlessness is a feeling of energy which can be used for good, but it is up to the individual to let that energy out.

What inspires you?

Everything. Because when the world is this full of vibrancy and sadness and kindness and beauty, how can a single thing not influence us? Everything inspires me, so it’d be wrong to list a few single things that my work and mind are focused on. I do however ‘see’ in very bright colours, mainly yellows and pinks. These two colours deeply inspire my personality and mindset.

What are you bringing to The Restless Times?

Well, I am the Editor-in-Chief and also the founder of the Restless Times. My role is to edit, organise, and write. I am also responsible for the feel and mood of the newspaper while keeping my beautifully talented and hearted staff members happy and inspired. I love giving this project energy, and when you read it, I hope you can feel that warmth glowing through the screen.

Who are you? What are you passionate about?

I’m a logical and creative person, loving both learning and art. I love to connect with my emotions and thoughts, and share them with others through my work. I am passionate about the power of knowledge, the many different types of art I love, my family, my friends, my future, my surroundings, the ocean, and the feelings of peace and freedom.

What does being ‘restless’ mean to you?

For me, restless means not being able to stop because your mind is going a mile a minute. Having every thought from the good to the bad, and not being able to slow down. And instead, embracing these thoughts; building off of the true ones and getting rid of the bad. In restless times, people may be tired and want to give up, but this is the time to continue to work and achieve everything you’ve ever dreamed of.

What inspires you?

Everything inspires me; from the people I follow on Instagram to the scenery surrounding me. I am inspired by pastel pink sunsets, gorgeous pictures found on Instagram, the ocean, the people around me, art – to name just a few.

What are you bringing to The Restless Times?

I am bringing a lot of things to the newspaper. I am working on so many different spectrums of writing, from preaching the importance of social issues, to inspiring others through words and poetry. I bring an enthusiasm for wanting to create a beautiful finished product, and being so grateful to be chosen for this opportunity.

Who are you? What are you passionate about?

I’m Abby – creative, adventurous and passionate, and from the south coast of Australia. I run Seafoam (hey guys), live part time on an island, and feel grounded and at home by the ocean. I love to read and write, surf, do yoga, take photos, make videos and speak french. I’m an overly-passionate person, from everything I want to change in the world, to everything I create and believe in.

What does being ‘restless’ mean to you?

I think it means feeling like you have to do something. All forms of creative people are restless – restless with their life, with the world, with their thoughts – and that’s what drives them to create, to inspire and to change. Being restless is … not being satisfied. It’s always wanting more, needing more. It’s always pushing your boundaries.

What inspires you?

Honestly, everything. A passing stranger, a snatch of dialogue, a particular colour, the sun hitting the ground just right … when I’m in the right mindset, and open entirely to the world, inspiration streams from everyone and everything.

What are you bringing to The Restless Times?

I’m the assistant editor, and I hope through that I can inspire the others on the team and make everything easier for them to come together. I have a lot of thoughts, and when I share them I think I make other people think, too – and I hope this can inspire people to try new things in themselves, their lives, and the world.

Who are you? What are you passionate about?

I’m Emma. I love the outdoors, anything kitchen related and children; I love the vibe children give off, and I love seeing children grow over time. In general I like to do things that make me feel calm and bring me and joy at the same time. I also love to travel; I can’t explain with words how travel can change a person, but I believe every person should travel as much as possible – whether that means going to another continent, or just going outside the town one grew up in.

What does being ‘restless’ mean to you?

To me, being restless means never being content with normalcy. I take this as a way of pushing myself and pushing my boundaries for the sake of keeping myself busy, and never bored.

What inspires you?

The environment I grew up in has always inspired me. At the dinner table growing up, I listened to my grandfathers stories of exploring Antarctica and going to India every summer for his studies. I was always taught to explore and to ask questions, and this has inspired me to create things, do things and want things without fear getting in the way.

What are you bringing to the The Restless Times?

To this newspaper I hope to bring a sense of wanderlust, and it’s my hope that people feel uplifted and empowered whenever they see or read my work.

Who are you? What are you passionate about?

I’m an avid tea drinker who enjoys walks on the beach at sunset. I run the blog Kisses From Jess, I love to run, write, and take photographs, and that pretty much sums me up! I’m passionate about spreading positivity and inspiring others through my writing.

What does being ‘restless’ mean to you?

Being restless means you won’t stop until your voice is heard. We have all felt like our opinions don’t matter at one point, but they do. If you are restless, you will speak up no matter how many times you are shot down. I am restless because I believe in change and a better world for everyone.

What inspires you?

I gain inspiration from the world around me. There are so many interesting people, architecture, conversations you overhear … everything inspires me. I don’t dismiss any ideas, because they can all be made into something original.

What are you bringing to The Restless Times?

I am bringing uplifting and informative pieces. I want to keep a lightness in the air but also keep everyone in-the-know about current events.

Who are you? What are you passionate about?

Hiya! I like words a lot, I fancy myself a bit of a dancer and a pianist, and I love to sail. I’m a Christian, too, and my faith is definitely the most important part of my life. I’m passionate about writing and life itself. Loving ourselves, our lives and each other is really hard, but I believe that they’re the most important things we can do. I also spend a lot of time shuffling around my house in my onesie, clutching onto my laptop and thinking up new things to write about.

What does being ‘restless’ mean to you?

For me, being restless is all about not sitting down and watching the bad stuff happen. We don’t all have to be (and can’t all be) activists and figureheads, heading up campaigns and being outspoken. But we can all do something, however small, and that, to me, is what being restless is about. It’s about caring, despite the consequences. It’s about not resting in our desire for positive change.

What inspires you?

As cliché as it sounds, I’m inspired by life. By everything I see, and do, and experience. As mundane as we all seem to think our lives are, we all have and experience things that few other people do, and it’s these things in my own life that inspire me. Living interestingly is so important to me.

What are you bringing to The Restless Times?

Myself, I guess! All of the team are so different and individual – we all live in different places, believe different things, come from different backgrounds, and see the world in a slightly different way. Personally, I bring the perspective of an English all-girls-school brat turned home schooler, and my own style of writing.

Who are you? What are you passionate about?

I’m a 19-year-old girl from a tiny town by the sea. Some would describe me as an old soul, others as a quiet person (which is only true when I’m around strangers). I would describe myself as reliable, creative and kind. I’m passionate about writing, because it’s the only way I can let my feelings out and say everything’s that’s on my mind, and I care deeply about equality and kindness.

What does being ‘restless’ mean to you?

Being restless to me means always expressing yourself, always keeping your mind free of judgement, always creating, and always trying to find inspiration in what surrounds you. Being restless to me is being yourself and not being scared to do anything.

What inspires you?

I’m inspired by my surroundings and by different things that happen to me, or simply by daily scenes of life I see. Also, seeing people get together to make positive changes and seeing others being creative.

What are you bringing to The Restless Times?

I think I’ll bring the point of view of a young European girl, and I’ll bring my experiences and my feelings. I’ll let all of my thoughts, dreams and achievements shine through my articles. Overall I hope that someone will feel inspired after reading one of my articles.

Who are you? What are you passionate about?

I am a seventeen year old girl from Poland living in London. I love photography; you will always see me with my camera in one hand and coffee in the other. Music is a huge part of my life; if I’m not at school I’m most likely at a gig, or blasting my spotify in the car with the windows down. And I freaking love animals, and I’m vegetarian. I always dream big, (maybe too big, but that’s just me). I’m passionate about health (physical and mental), feminism and fighting cruelty in the meat industry.

What does being ‘restless’ mean to you?

To me, “restless” means unsatisfied, dreamy, passionate.

What inspires you?

It’s hard for me not to be inspired by all the beautiful places, people and art around me; so simply EVERYTHING inspires me.

What are you bringing to The Restless Times?

I hope I can bring creativity and inspiration to the magazine, and hopefully people can get positivity out of it.

Who are you? What are you passionate about?

I’m Caitlyn and I’m American-Chinese. I was born in Hong Kong and raised in Shanghai! Apart from that, I am a creative homebody and traveler with a New Year’s resolution of trying to be on time, despite having already failed multiple times this year! I currently live in Paris where I’m studying at drama school. I’m passionate about travel, sunshine, cinnabons and film photography (any kind of art, really). I’m also really passionate about being more accepting of people as they are, rather than what society says constitutes a good person.

What does being ‘restless’ mean to you?

To me, being ‘restless’ means to feel an eagerness for life and feel like there is always more that can be done, but in an exciting way rather than feeling like there’s too much to do.

What inspires you?

I’m really inspired by honesty, authenticity and originality. I love meeting people who are unapologetically themselves and find the good, bad and messy in their lives and embrace it all. Specifically, I’m really inspired by my mom – the older I get, the closer we get, and I love learning more about her and realizing how much she has done and sacrificed for my sisters and I, and how hard she has worked to get to where she is. She is truly the most selfless, smartest person I know, and she inspires me every single day.

What are you bringing to The Restless Times?

I’m so excited to be a writer and editor of the arts category for the newspaper :) I hope that we will gets lots of creative and artistic submissions by talented people that we can share in the newspaper and encourage people to explore themselves through art.
