Portsea: Dolphin Diving and Seals

DEPSITE ONLY three hours of sleep and weather so cold I wasn’t sure I’d ever regain the use of my fingers and toes, Monday’s never looked so good.

Today was spent in Portsea with some of my closest friends. We spent the morning on a boat diving with dolphins and seals (and on the roof, snuggled in wet towels and drinking hot chocolate) and generally trying not to develop hypothermia. Despite the cold, the long hours, the painfully thick wetsuits … it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life.

After a lunch of fish and chips, sea-salt caramel ice-cream and milkshakes (+ a quick detour to Coles for watermelon), we headed down to Back Beach and explored the lifesaving tower there, which looked out over the most STUNNING views of the ocean.

Seals making sounds like drunk laughter, lost cameras, spilling hot chocolate, dressing in cramped cabins, dolphins close enough to touch, jellyfish a little too close, jumpers piled upon jumpers and over-exposed polaroids – the day is fractured into odd moments.

A sun-soaked, quietly productive evening just about topped it off perfectly. There’s a video in the works, but in the meantime, wishing you all a stress-free rest of the week.
